AiOP - Art in Odd Places 2013: NUMBER/Australia - Coffee Break
A group of Art & Soul Collective artists participated in Art in Odd Places 2013:NUMBER /Australia in September. This international art event was held for the first time on the Northern Beaches of Sydney over two weekends in two locations: The Strand, Dee Why and The Corso area, Manly.
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) presents visual and performance art in unexpected public spaces and produces an annual festival along 14th Street in Manhattan each October. In 2012, AiOP travelled to Saint Petersburg, Russia to present the city's first-ever public art festival with nine American artists and nine Russian artists. For 2013 AiOP/Australia, three American artists developed public works through workshops with members of the local community and were joined by 23 Australian artists or groups.
Nine Art & Soul Collective members were excited to have their group proposal for Coffee Break accepted for AiOP/ Australia. Coffee Break quantifies local coffee consumption and highlights the merge of coffee culture and surf culture in the local coastal communities of Dee Why and Manly. Towers of recycled takeaway coffee cups and lids form a wave representative of a changing cultural swell. Coffee Breaks’ NUMBER is 2676 – this is how many kilos of coffee are consumed in Dee Why and Manly in a week. Consequently there are 2676 cups in the installation.
The nine artists who created Coffee Break are Mary-Anne Barnes, Cherry Corr, Amanda Farquharson, Cindy Goode-Milman, Penny Polkinghorne, Maria Romeo, Pru Smith, Pam Henry-May and Leonie Niven.
