A&SC Sketchers

A&SC Sketchers

The A&SC Sketchers are a group of artists that enjoy painting outdoors, and the camaraderie that comes from painting with friends.

Any member who wishes to participate is welcome — professional artists, amateurs, the adventurous! We meet on the last Wednesday of  every month from 10 am till 1 pm.

No special equipment is required, at minimum a pencil and sketchbook, something to sit on, a drink, a hat and perhaps insect repellent. But you can work in any medium you prefer.

The month's location and all necessary details are emailed to members.

A&SC Sketchers 2020 Program

Heeding a few suggestions from members I have put together a more ambitious program for this year. This will mean most of the sketching days are probably going to be further away and be longer than the usual 3 hours. For keen sketchers, this time need not be wasted while travelling as we could sketch each other, the interior of the ferry/bus, or even unsuspecting members of the public. The advantage with sketching the general public is you don’t need to worry about lack of a likeness!

In previous years have had a strong focus on the Northern Beaches and natural landscapes. However, we have been too many times to the same old places and it is time for a change. Let’s take on the challenge of incorporating buildings and people into our sketching. For those who really can’t face this prospect, I’m sure you’ll still be able to find trees or flowers.
• Wednesday - 26 February - AGNSW Japanese Supernatural Exhibition.
Midori Furze assures me this is a fantastic exhibition. After the exhibition, we can have a picnic across the road in the park. There is a kiosk where you can buy coffee and food. There are seats here and there. The National Library building is a wonderful sight to draw and of course, the Morton Bay Fig trees are sublime. Toilets in the Gallery.

• Wednesday 25 March - Balmoral Pavilion.
Off to the left at the bottom of Awaba Street gives a very pleasing aspect of the Pavilion. Many other things to draw. Toilets in the Pavilion. Coffee across the road. It’s 2 hour metered parking so after 2 hours we could drive further along and sketch near the boat shed and baths.

• Wednesday 22 April - ferry to Watson’s Bay from Manly
Fast ferry to Watson’s Bay. The ferries run regularly and in April the weather should still be warm. There are plenty of things to sketch near Watson’s Bay wharf but there are also places nearby. Toilets at the wharf and places to buy coffee or food.

• Wednesday 27 May - Davis Marina, North Harbour, near 40 Baskets Beach, North Harbour.
This boat shed and Marina is a short walk if you park in Goulay Avenue. It has lots of sketch opportunities. Toilets are further along the path towards 40 Baskets beach. The kiosk in Condamine Street may be open for coffee otherwise there are shops at Sydney Road. Or bring a thermos!

• Wednesday 24 June - Bobbin Head
I haven’t been here for years but it’s a big open area with plenty of places to park and things to sketch. At present, the website won’t let me open it for information because the park is closed due to danger from bushfires. When the Notice is sent out for this day more information will be provided.

• Wednesday 22 July - S H Ervin gallery and observatory
The gallery doesn’t open until 11:00 so why not drive there early to get a parking space and have a pre-exhibition sketch of the gallery exterior? There is usually a good exhibition here. Then Observatory Hill beckons with its historic stone cottages as well as the Gazebo or distant views over the harbour. Toilets at the gallery. There’s a restaurant but it’s often crowded and service is rather slow. The gallery is a 10-minute walk from Wynyard or there is limited parking at the gallery. Coffee available in cafes en route from Wynyard.

• Wednesday 26 August - Cremorne Point, Marina and Rowing Club
The area around the wharf is interesting and also around the corner at the Marina. Toilets at the Rowing Club. There is a cafe at the wharf. Panorama views of the harbour.

• Wednesday 23 September - MCA exhibition & buildings at Circular Quay
The MCA building has some interesting features to draw and the exhibitions are usually worth a visit. Streetscapes in Lower George Street are interesting if you want to draw more of a panorama. The wharves at Circular Quay and the general flow of people along the waterfront is a sketching challenge. Toilets in the gallery. There’s a cafe in the gallery and others nearby.

• Wednesday 28 October - Garrison Church and environs
The streetscape around the church is very interesting historically as well as the church itself. The jacarandas should be blooming and there are a few fine examples near here. Limited parking in this area but it’s only a 10-minute walk from Wynyard. Cafes nearby but toilets are a short walk away near The Rocks.

• Wednesday 25 November - The Coal Loader, Balls Head
Plenty of historical subjects to sketch. There’s a cafe and toilets. Limited parking in Balls Head Road. 10-minute walk from Waverton Station. The jacarandas should still be in bloom.
***
As usual, a detailed email with meeting places and times as well as further transport options will be sent out a week before the event. Details of what exhibitions are on at the various galleries will then be available. Sometimes dates might have to be changed for various reasons but generally, A&SC sketchers will be meeting on the fourth Wednesday each month.

Going further afield, especially if using public transport, means keeping your drawing materials lightweight and only take a chair if it’s lightweight and easily portable. Carpooling could be an option on some of these days. Details in reminder emails.

If you are a new member, please call if you want to know what to materials to bring - 0417-067-731. Otherwise, as well as your drawing materials bring along a hat, sunscreen, a seat and a windproof jacket in case there’s a cold wind or the weather turns nasty.

Looking forward to seeing some new faces this year and reconnecting with regulars from last year.

Cheers
Judith Rostron
