Inspiration for my artworks comes from nature and from my connection with and love of the Australian landscape. Connections with the earth, its cycles and rhythms, concerns for its problems and questions about its future are all issues important to me and are explored in my works.
My paintings and drawings are often symbolic and I am interested in experimenting with textural possibilities and qualities of form, light and colour. The colours are earthy, giving the paintings inherent warmth. Un-primed, torn canvas is often used for its raw, natural quality. In my drawings the paper is textured, carved and scratched, peeled and sanded to create weathered textures. Recent ideas and themes poetically explore metamorphosis and transformation. I have been experimenting with the interplay of wind and rain with my mixed media drawings and paintings, creating collaborative artworks with nature. I am currently exploring the idea of mapping and topography.
My sculptural works are meditative and I strive for a poetic, spiritual and timeless quality. They are quiet, calm and occupy a timeless space and show their symbiotic relationship with nature and the earth. My recent kinetic sculptures are organic forms inspired by nature and use air currents to quietly move them. This fascination for simple organic shapes has made me try to capture “the essence”- to eliminate unnecessary detail and to aspire to achieve a formal simplicity in my work.
