Artists have been painting landscapes since at least the Greeks and Romans. Classic landscape paintings came about in the 16th and 17th centuries. Typically the landscape was shown as an idealised grand vista, inspired by nature but highly orchestrated by the artist. The approach to representing landscapes developed over time, sometimes favouring “true” representations, at other times preferring a more idealised approach.
In contrast to the grand vista, my approach is to focus on relatively small details in the landscape. I am interested in the detail of rock formations and the process by which they are come into being. Although my work is based on exactly what I see, the effect in my painting is to present an abstracted perspective.
